Big Rapids Riverwalk

The Big Rapids Riverwalk traces the Muskegon River from downtown Big Rapids north to Northend Riverside Park, linking Hemlock Park and Swede Hill Park along the way. Four fishing platforms sit along the paved path, the trail's signature feature, alongside benches, bike racks, and picnic areas positioned on both sides of a 250-foot wooden bridge that crosses the river. The community raised more than $1 million toward construction, with additional funding from the Michigan DNR Trust Fund and the City of Big Rapids, and the finished trail has since won recognition as an award-winning, fully accessible pathway. Anglers return each year for the Catch-A-Fish, Grant-A-Wish tournament held during DNR Free Fishing Weekend, an event that draws participants of all ages to the fishing terrace. On the trail's north end, the Riverwalk connects directly to White Pine Trail State Park, Michigan's second-longest rail-trail, which runs 93 miles from just north of Grand Rapids up to Cadillac. The trail is open for walking or biking in the summer months, and for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing once winter sets in. Ferris State University rents outdoor equipment nearby, giving visitors without their own gear an easy way to get out on the trail. Parking is available at several points along the route, including River Street Park, Hemlock Park, and Northend Riverside Park.
