Join Michigan native and wildlife ecologist Max Henschell for an engaging presentation on the vital work of the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory, one of the premier bird monitoring sites in the Great Lakes region.

Max’s passion for birds began with spotting a Magnolia Warbler on Isle Royale, and has since taken him across Michigan’s most iconic birding locations. His experience includes counting waterbirds at Whitefish Point, monitoring marshbirds at Seney National Wildlife Refuge, and observing hawk migration at Brockway Mountain.

Max holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Applied Ecology from Michigan Technological University and a Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research explores migration ecology, habitat use, and the effects of human activity on bird communities. He has also worked with major datasets such as eBird, GBIF, and PRISM climate data to predict how climate change may reshape avian populations across the United States.

In this program, Max will share highlights from Whitefish Point’s 2025 season, discuss long-term historical trends, and preview future research and conservation projects underway at the observatory.

Perfect for birders, nature lovers, and anyone interested in wildlife ecology and conservation in Michigan, this event offers a fascinating look at how scientists study and protect our feathered friends.
