Michigan State Scholar, Thomas Henthorn will discuss Alexis de Toqueville and Free Speech and Social Media in the US.
Alexis de Toqueville argued that there can be no democracy without freedom of speech. Despite the belief in freedom of speech he believed that there were limits, not placed by the government but by the majority. This presentation will consider whether Facebook and Twitter policies are consistent with de Toqueville's interpretation of free speech and democracy in action.
