“Quo Vadis, Aida?” Screening and Discussion sponsored by FSU Shoah Committee
805 Campus Drive
Big Rapids, MI 49307
This award-winning film offers a gripping dramatization of the July 1995 Srebrenica massacre, during which more than 8,300 Bosniak men and boys were killed in one of the darkest atrocities in modern European history. The story confronts difficult questions about how violence and dehumanization can become normalized in everyday life.
Based on real events and inspired by survivor Hasan Nuhanović’s book Under the UN Flag, the film follows the fictional character Aida Selmanagac, modeled after Nuhanović’s experience. Working as an interpreter during negotiations between Dutch peacekeepers and local officials, Aida simultaneously struggles to save her husband and sons as the Serb Army approaches. The result is a deeply emotional portrayal that brings the reality of genocide into sharp focus.
Though the film has received numerous European film festival awards, it remains relatively little known in the United States, making this screening an important opportunity for reflection and learning.
The Ferris State University viewing will include an introduction by Professor Marina Palvetic, who lived in Croatia during the genocide, followed by a moderated discussion session after the film. Food will be provided.
Ideal for students, educators, and community members seeking meaningful cultural and historical programming in West Michigan, this event offers a powerful space for remembrance, dialogue, and understanding.
