Quilts of Valor National Sew Day
106 N. Michigan Avenue
Big Rapids, MI 49307
The Old Jail Quilters invite the community to take part in Quilts of Valor National Sew Day, a meaningful, hands-on event dedicated to honoring and comforting those touched by war. Held at Artworks, this all-day quilting event supports the mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, which was founded in 2003 to recognize the service and sacrifice of military veterans.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation began with a deeply personal vision from founder Catherine Roberts, whose son was deployed in Iraq. From the start, the foundation established high standards of excellence, viewing each quilt as the civilian equivalent of a Purple Heart. Quilts of Valor are carefully quilted by hand or machine, never tied, and are formally awarded to veterans as a lasting symbol of gratitude. Each quilt conveys a clear and heartfelt message: thank you for your service, sacrifice, and valor in serving our nation in combat.
Community members of all skill levels are welcome to participate. Visitors may join the quilters throughout the day or stop by to observe the craftsmanship and care that go into each quilt. The quilts created during National Sew Day will be presented to local veterans, with one such presentation taking place during the event.
This event offers a powerful opportunity to engage in community service, textile arts, and veteran recognition in Mecosta County, while witnessing the impact of creativity, collaboration, and gratitude stitched into every quilt.
