Come and experience the possibilities of paper! Did you know that Japan has more handmade papers than the rest of the world combined? Or that there are many kinds of Japanese paper arts – some practiced for 1,000 years?
National award-winning artist Linda Stephen will present a hands-on workshop about the Japanese paper arts including origami (paper folding), kirigami, (paper cutting), and chigiri-e, (ripping paper).
Touch a variety of the artisanal washi Japanese papers that are the medium for Linda’s art, from wrinkled momigami to hand-silkscreened chiyogami fabric papers to the thinnest paper in the world. Then try your hands at folding an easy origami model such as a butterfly or a basket.
Linda has taught origami to thousands of people, ages 3 to 97. If you can fold a piece of paper in half into a rectangle or a triangle, you have the skills needed. See Linda’s intricate origami artworks for sale at the “Made in Japan?”
Exhibit at Artworks, August 22 to September 29. Workshop materials provided.
Linda Stephen’s origami landscapes are part of public and private collections around the world. A graduate of Big Rapids High School, she lived in Shiga, Japan, Michigan’s sister prefecture, for six years and worked as a teacher and translator.
Her origami picture book The Day We Went to the Park, which includes scenes of Northern Michigan, won the 2021 Nebraska Book Award for Illustration.
