Kimn Carleton-Smith, professor emeritus from Ferris State University, discuss Juke Joints: A Progression. Her presentation will focus on Juke Joints documented during the 1930s by the Farm Security Administration (FSA) photography staff. The FSA photographers were charged with documenting the hardship of the Dustbowl and displaced farm workers and with recording the reforms achieved by various New Deal Programs established by FDR. Primarily relying on the images taken by Marion Post Wolcott, Kimn will discuss the vernacular architecture of the Juke Joint and the culture within the Juke Joint setting. Wolcott's Juke Joint images were taken during her assignments in Florida and Mississippi.
Prior to pursuing her academic career, Kimn had a career in retail. From 1981-1983, she managed a large chain record store in the Delta town of Greenville, Mississippi, known as the Home of the Blues. Greenville, located on the banks of the Mississippi River, is one of the largest towns within 150 miles in any direction. While managing that record store, she became very familiar with blues music that was so intertwined with the Delta's history and local culture. She organized in-store events with local blues artists, including B.B. King and Z.Z. Hill, when their new albums released.
