Humans have long sought to make sense of their environment by representing it in landscape art. Artists painted landscapes in prehistoric dwellings, Egyptian palaces, Roman villas, and on Chinese scrolls. The term landscape comes from the Dutch word “landchap” which meant patch of ground, an apt name for paintings that dramatized the expansive sky and sea overwhelming the small patch that is the lowlands.
This exhibit features four landscape artists who paint with clear sense of the tradition: Anthony Cairo, Katie Mester, James Roberts (JR), and Tom Tomasek.
