Explore the intersection of art, nature, and environmental awareness through an exhibit featuring the work of Grand Rapids artist Justin Kellner. Drawing inspiration from landscapes he has personally explored, Kellner’s paintings balance realism and abstraction to evoke memory, place, and time while highlighting the fragile ecosystems that exist throughout the natural world.

Using the landscape’s natural forms and textures as a foundation, Kellner combines expressive, abstract brushstrokes with realistically rendered birds, creating visual tension that reflects erosion, change, and isolation within natural environments. Birds play a central role in his work, serving as powerful indicators of ecosystem health and environmental vulnerability. The result is a body of work that invites viewers to reflect on interrupted natural cycles and humanity’s relationship with the land.

Kellner’s intent is not only to portray the beauty of these environments, but also to inspire deeper exploration and personal investment in local ecosystems and their long-term health.

A special artist reception and Bird Week kickoff will take place on Monday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Guests will have the opportunity to meet Justin Kellner, connect with 2026 Public Art sculptor John Warner, and enjoy an introduction to birding with Joe Lipar, making the evening both educational and engaging.

This exhibit and reception are ideal for those interested in nature-inspired art, environmental themes, birding, and creative community events in Mecosta County, offering a meaningful way to connect art, ecology, and place.
