    Name: Brown Bag Lunch Series
    Date: February 1, 2019
    Time: 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM EST
    Event Description:
February 1, Muriel Zandstra: Merizon: A Mixed Metaphor Using original paintings, direct quotes, and interesting clips from the documentary and book on Armand Merizon, Zandstra will illustrate the wide range of styles and techniques created by this painter. Spanning an artistic career of over 75 years, you will see Merizon’s earliest known painting at age 12 of a realistic sea scape, as well as his latest musical abstract at age 89 when he was legally blind. He has often been compared to both Mozart composing a symphony as a child, and Beethoven writing music when totally deaf. Armand Merizon was a renowned 20th century American painter who lived the majority of his life in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area.

February 8, Harry Dempsey: John Williams and the Leitmotif In the 1970s, John Williams was the spearhead of a renaissance in the classical movie music compositional techniques which had been used in the1930s by Max Steiner and others of the era. Like Richard Wagner and Steiner, Williams utilized a full lyric symphonic orchestra, stirring emotional music that mirrored the ethos of the action on the screen and the return of and extended use of leitmotifs. In film music the most recognizable leitmotif is the John Williams two note representation of the shark in Jaws.

February 15, Grant Snider: The Art of the Good Life — Techniques for Happiness from Ancient Philosophy to Contemporary Psychotherapy We generally admire people who live in a relative state of calm despite chaos around them, who have the resilience to bounce back from the inevitable disappointments of life, or who seem content with their status while those around them frantically chase after the next new success. How do such people create these beautiful lives? Philosophy offers us guidance in seeking clarity in creating such a life. In this presentation/workshop, we will survey some of the specific techniques and skills ancient philosophers and contemporary psychotherapists have used in creating the art of the good life.

February 22, Lynette Vought: Artists’ Palettes — Color Theory and Creative Choices Lynette Vought will be discussing the principles of color theory and color mixing as well as application in the art of transparent and opaque painting. She will also present palettes of a few artists and identify how the colors are mixed in their paintings.
